Let’s be real: Scrivener is a beast. It’s the most powerful writing tool on the planet, but opening the “Compile” window for the first time feels like trying to fly a space shuttle.

Most writers get so intimidated that they export their work to Word and spend days fighting with margins and page breaks. Stop doing that. If you know which buttons to ignore, you can turn your messy manuscript into a professional-grade eBook or PDF for Amazon KDP in exactly 10 minutes. Here is your shortcut.

Organize Your Binder (3 Minutes)

Before you hit the “magic button,” your Binder (the list on the left) needs to be clean.

  • Make sure every chapter is its own Folder.
  • Make sure the scenes inside are Text Documents.
  • Scrivener uses this hierarchy to know where to put “Chapter One,” “Chapter Two,” etc.

Assign Section Types (2 Minutes)

This is where most people get lost. You need to tell Scrivener what is a chapter and what is a scene.

  1. Go to Project Settings > Section Types.
  2. Make sure your Folders are labeled as “Chapter” and your Documents as “Scene.” Quick Tip: Scrivener usually does this automatically if you’ve used the “Novel” template.

The “Compile” Window (4 Minutes)

Now, the scary part. Go to File > Compile.

  1. Format As: On the left, choose “eBook” (for Kindle/ePub) or “Paperback with Modern Fonts” (for Print).
  2. Assign Layouts: Click the “Assign Layouts” button at the bottom. This tells Scrivener: “Hey, for every folder, use the layout that has the ‘Chapter One’ title at the top.”
  3. Select the layout that looks best to you. Keep it clean and real.
Format your book in Scrivener in no time.

Hit “Compile” and Breathe (1 Minute)

Choose where to save your file (e.g., .epub for Amazon KDP) and hit export.

That’s it. Open the file. Look at those perfect margins. Look at that auto-generated Table of Contents. You just saved $200 on a professional formatter.
